Education & Training

The Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House strongly supports the principles of education and training for the benefit of the youth of the north-east and of adult learning and special interest groups.

Sea Cadets and Sea Scouts:
The Corporation coordinates a programme of visits, talks and other training activities, particularly for sea cadets and sea scouts in the region. Working with various local partner maritime authorities, organizations and companies, youngsters are introduced to aspects of the maritime world, with a particular emphasis on safety on the water. Besides Trinity House itself, visits are regularly arranged to the Port of Tyne Control Room, South Tyneside College’s Marine Safety Training Centre and the Tynemouth RNLI station.

Please be advised that the listed buildings of Trinity House do include steps which may present some difficulties to our less mobile visitors.

School Groups:
The House also encourages school visits, where the children, working in small supervised groups, undertake the “Explorer’s Challenge” – a successful activity quiz, incorporating elements of history, art, English and mathematics, developed in association with the Newcastle City Council Area Education Outreach Officer and designed to complement the national curriculum. A charge of £3.50 per child is made, with no charge to accompanying teachers and assistants, subject to a minimum charge of £35. For schools in the Newcastle upon Tyne Council area, some limited funding may be available to off-set this charge or the cost of travel. All necessary stationary is provided by the House on the day, but a briefing paper for teachers is available in advance of a visit on application.

Adult Education Groups:
U3A and other adult education groups frequently undertake tours at Trinity House. In the majority of cases, these visits fall within the definition of the standard tours and arrangements are made on that basis. Groups should be 10 or more and a charge of £7.50 per head is normally made. In some cases, when organised through an educational institution, central funding may be accepted in lieu of all or part of this charge and a discount may apply. We suggest you allow around one-and-a-half to two hours for the visit.

Please contact the Office Secretary at Trinity House to make the necessary arrangements or to request further information.

Special Interest Groups:
Occasionally, we get requests from groups with a particular interest in architecture, maritime art, furniture, religious premises or other areas of specialised interest. In the majority of cases, these visits also fall within the definition of the standard tours, but we will endeavour to provide a Guide who has knowledge of the required area. Groups should be 10 or more and a charge of £7.50 per head is normally made. In some cases, when organised through an educational institution, central funding may be accepted in lieu of all or part of this charge and a discount may apply.
